Wild Lens Collective

52-week, 12-month project

I have been toying with this idea for some time now, looking for a way to use my camera on a weekly basis. The idea is simple and two-fold: 1) take a photograph of a bird every week for one entire year and, 2) shoot video of wildlife every month for one year. Those who are close to me know I am a very scientific-minded person however my association with Wild Lens has started to change that a little (in a good way!). Working for a non-profit focused on educating the public through media and film behooves me to become better with my camera, which in turn requires a little more creativity. Basically, I want to become a better photographer and filmmaker, and I think this project will help me accomplish that goal. Without further ado, here are the general rules for the project:

52 week photography rules:

  1. Shoot at least one bird photograph every week during 2013
  2. The week is from Thursday-Wednesday
  3. Weekly photos will be uploaded to my Flickr account and the Wild Lens blog every Wednesday unless I happen to be in some remote area without internet access
  4. A specific bird species can only be used once a month, and not on consecutive weeks

12 month videography rules:

  1. Shoot at least a 30 second continuous wildlife (not just birds!) clip every month
  2. Monthly video clips will be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo and the Wild Lens blog on the first of every month, unless I happen to be in some remote area without internet access
  3. A specific species can only be used once

My first photographic post will be three weeks from today (assuming we survive the apocalypse of course) on Wednesday, January 9th 2013 and my last will be on Wednesday, January 1st 2014. My first video post will be on Friday, February 1st 2013. I know some weeks and months it will be very difficult for me to accomplish this task (and some pictures may not be as great as I hoped), especially considering I don’t even know where I will be after June of 2013. However, I’m hopeful that I can make this work for the entire year, and I think I will be better for it. So come January 9th, I hope you all will look forward to the first of my 64 posts during the 2013 calendar year! I’m stoked to get started!
